I keep a list of children in movies that I call the Unless You Become As These Children You Shall By No Mean Enter The Kingdom list. At the top of that list is Yang-Yang, the eponymic hero of Edward Yang’s final film. There are few movies that are as epic and yet as laconic in theme as Yi Yi. It is a masterfully wrought family drama, but one that so attends an attitude to the mysterious that it is positively universal in scope.
