1996 the Saturday night before the election I was watching SNL. Norm McDonald (who impersonated (I would say personated) Bob Dole) signed off with “vote Bob Dole”, presumably because he wanted to keep his role for four more years.

That was the day my faith in the American system died.

Across the Universe was dreadful and only likable to shameless fans, but despite writing some of the most insipid lyrics ever they are given the Shakespearian treatment by the film; meaning every line is delivered as if it were the weightiest gold. The soundtrack does nothing by draw out the songs, slowing them down to octogenarian Southern Baptist Hymn speed. I suppose because they are sacred.

But being forced to hear these lyrics I realized their most famous songs are simply blaise heretical thought. Consider:

“Nothing’s gonna change my world”

“All you need is love”

“Let it be”

  • The Wizard of Oz was the first children’s film nominated for best picture
  • Gone with the Wind is the longest film nominated for best picture (3hrs 54 mins)
  • Midnight Cowboy was the first X-rated film to win best picture
  • Clockwork Orange was the last X-rated film to be nominated for best picture
  • Godfather II was the first sequel to win best picture
  • Ben-Hur, Titanic, and LotR:tFotR hold the record for Oscars at 11
